Name: Vahid

Country: Iran

Studying: Masters in Health Science Administration at ACU Brisbane

Vahid, a medical doctor back in his home country, talks about his current course, the educational system in Australia and the things that he has learnt since coming here.

What was your first day at ACU like?

I came to the ACU campus before orientation because I wanted to have my own campus tour. The first person that I met at ACU was a lecturer. He was very kind and guided me to the international office. I met Maria Valastro, the student advisor, and she gave me lots of important information about transport, accommodation and so on. She also introduced me to the other staff members there.

Then I checked out the library and the first thing I noticed about it was that it was very cold. I made a note to bring a jumper next time!

The two main things that stuck out about my first day at ACU was how friendly everyone was, and how you can be close to the lecturers. And second was how beautiful the campus is!

How have you found the education at ACU?

The reason I chose to study in Australia is because I wanted to learn about the health system here and also to have an insight into the education system. The lecturers encourage self-study, so we have to do all the research and then apply that knowledge in our assignments. I think this is a very effective way of learning, as we don’t memorise but actually learn.

In Iran, the education system consists of memorization and then just repeating that. We will be penalised if we try to give our own opinion. So for me, the education system in Australia is a refreshing change that challenges me to think for myself.

What surprised you about Australia?

I already knew that they drive on the left in Australia, unlike in Iran, so that did not surprise me. I think the thing that I found the most surprising was that before coming here, I assumed that everybody followed the rules rigidly. But I have seen drivers go through red lights, and that surprised me!

What do you miss about Iran?

I miss Iranian food! I have not found any Iranian restaurants here. I heard that there is one in the Gold Coast but that is miles away!

What advice would you give new students in Australia?

English language skills are extremely important. If you have a good ability to communicate in English, you will be successful in finding friends, studying and even finding good part time jobs. So work very hard to improve your English.

I think it’s also important to find students who are doing the same subject that you are doing. You can learn a lot from them.

The worst thing that a student can do is to stay rigidly within their own community. If you choose to study in an international atmosphere, you should experience that. If not, you will deprive yourself. I recommend making friends from all different countries and languages, not just your fellow citizens.
